La Loma Blumentritt
La Loma was one of the places in Manila where Filipino and Spaniards fought. The blockhouses of the Spaniards are located here made of wood, stone, and rubble. The Filipino blockhouses also stands here as their defense by the Spaniards during the revolution.
During the revolution, the blockhouses became the battleground of mad Filipinos against the defending Spaniards. As Manila start to yield to the Americans, strong fighting went on at Blockhouses 2, 3 and 4 at Maypajo and La Loma on August 13,1898. Major Jose Torres Bugallon, who defended La Loma and aide-de-camp of Gen. Antonio Luna, died. His remains now lie inside the Sampaloc Church in Manila.
When I interview Kap. William Manugar Maca Chua, according to him, Jose Rizal instructions before his death that he wants to be buried in the ground and place a stone and a cross over it. His name, the date of his birth, and his death. Nothing more. No anniversaries. He prefer Paang Bundok, but that was not followed.
Also according to him, there are two landmarks in La Loma that they care of. The Lechon and the La Loma Cockpit.

Lechon
Lechon is among the recipes closest to the heart of the Filipinos. Fiesta, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, etc., it's the centerpiece of the feast. Lechon means "suckling pig" in Spanish, roasted whole over an open coal pit. It is prepared by filling the inside of the animal with vegetables and flavor like lemon grass and tamarind leaves, salt, and blend of spices. When the skin turns reddish and the inside flesh becomes tender this means that it is ready to eat. The lechons are displayed on the sidewalks and you can purchase it as a whole or per kilo.
These were all started by Mr. Tomas de los Reyes ( Mang Tomas Native Lechon ) in early 50's. He got a lot of competitors.
On February 4,2004, Mayor Sonny Belmonte declared La Loma as the Lechon Capital of the Philippines. Yearly, the parade of lechon is on 3rd Sunday of May. They put the lechons on the float and parade it.

La Loma Cockpit
La Loma Cockpit is considered as the oldest cockpit in the Philippines. This was founded in 1903 by late Narciso Guison, and today it was own by stockholders Reyes family. It is a place of cockfighting during Tuesdays-Sundays. The tourists will only complete their stay here in the Philippines if they will witness the fight of two animals known as "sabong".
This was my first time to enter and watch the fight of two animals. We are accompanied by the two workers of Brgy. Paang Bundok. The place is crowded and noisy. I didn't know that even girls bet to this kind of game. What I noticed is that they shout "meron" during the fight. I asked one of the workers what is the meaning of "meron", he explained it to me but I didn't get it maybe because I don't know how to play "sabong".
